Behold the Civil War Stronghold of Fort Pulaski
This 5,600-acre national park was the site of a major Civil War battle. Part of the Union's plan to cripple the South was taking Fort Pulaski. Savannah, GA was a key port city for the Confederacy, guarded by this stalwart post off Tybee Island. The Union's rifle cannon technology proved too brutal an onslaught to withstand, though, and the South was forced to surrender. Today, cannon damage is still visible on the fort's exterior, with an indoor museum, and daily historic weapon demonstrations.
