HOTEL TYBEE 1889 – 1909
The original Hotel Tybee was constructed in 1889. This amazing hotel also offered rental cottages, and a world-class beach front dancing pavilion. During this period, Tybee Island was only accessible by an 18-mile train ride from Savannah. The train would deliver guests to the front door of the resort.
HOTEL TYBEE DESTROYED July 31, 1909
Unfortunately, fire swept through the Hotel Tybee and reduced it to ashes. No guests were injured, but the hotel was a complete loss.
HOTEL TYBEE 1911 – 1961
Just two years later, Hotel Tybee was reconstructed and opened in 1911. This amazing hotel, restaurant and banquet facility proudly hosted vacationers for the next fifty years.
OCEAN PLAZA BEACH RESORT 1989 – 2015
The Spirides family constructed and opened the Ocean Plaza Beach Resort in 1989. By 2000 the hotel proudly offered 204 guest rooms, a large restaurant and bar. The property was sold on July 31, 2014 to a group of hoteliers that are committed to making the lodging facility Georgia's premier beachfront vacation destination.
HOTEL TYBEE 2015 - Present
In the spring of 2015, after completing "Phase One" of a three-year remodeling program, the property was renamed Hotel Tybee. The hotel's owners and staff are committed to continuing the 125+ year old legacy of Hotel Tybee and serving the needs of the island's vacationers. On December 28th, 2015 Hotel Tybee was announced as the Peoples Choice Award for "Best Hotel on Tybee Island".
