Tybee Island has a way of bringing everyone together. Spend the day on the beach, climb the lighthouse, cruise in search of dolphins, explore the island by bike, or grab something great to eat along the way. Whether you’re traveling with younger kids, teens, grandparents, or a mix of everyone, we’ve put together some of our favorite ways to make the most of a family getaway to Tybee.
Day One: South Beach, Splash Pad, and Alligators
Breakfast at Sunrise Restaurant
Start with pancakes, French toast, eggs, biscuits, grits, and plenty of coffee for the parents. Sunrise is casual, affordable, and extremely easy with children.
South Beach and Tybee Pier
Spend the morning swimming, collecting shells, and building the first great sandcastle of the trip. Walk to the end of the Tybee Pier and browse the colorful shops along Tybrisa Street.
Lunch at Spanky’s Beachside
Located directly across from the beach, Spanky’s is famous for its original chicken fingers and battered potatoes. The relaxed atmosphere, familiar menu, and ocean views make it an excellent family stop.
Pools and Tybee Tidal Zone Splash Pad
Return to Hotel Tybee for an afternoon at the two pools and Tybee Island’s only splash pad. The children can conquer the spray cannons while the parents relax poolside. Parents should wear bathing suits because staying dry in the Tybee Tidal Zone is rarely an option.
Rest and Recharge
Head back to the room for showers, snacks, and a little quiet time before dinner.
Dinner at The Original Crab Shack
This is more than dinner—it is a full family attraction. Enjoy outdoor dining beneath the trees, see the exotic birds, visit the gift shop, and stop at the alligator lagoon. The restaurant even sells approved food for feeding the young alligators.
Evening Beach Walk
Return to South Beach for a relaxed walk and let the children burn off their final fifteen million units of energy.
Day Two: Lighthouse, Dolphins, and Dockside Seafood
Breakfast at Sunrise Restaurant
Try the weekend buffet or order pancakes for the table. Everyone should eat well because this will be the biggest adventure day.
Tybee Island Lighthouse
Climb the lighthouse with children who are comfortable managing the stairs. Families with younger children can explore the historic cottages, museum, and lighthouse grounds.
North Beach
Search for shells and watch the massive container ships travel to and from the Port of Savannah. Children are often amazed by how close and enormous the ships appear.
Lunch at North Beach Bar & Grill
Located beside the lighthouse and beach, this colorful outdoor restaurant keeps the day simple. Enjoy seafood, burgers, sandwiches, and cold drinks without leaving the North Beach area.
Family Dolphin Cruise
Head out on the water to search for Tybee’s resident dolphins. Along the way, families may also see Cockspur Lighthouse, Fort Pulaski, and some of Tybee’s beautiful surrounding waterways.
Pool and Splash Pad Time
Return to Hotel Tybee for another afternoon swim. After sitting on the boat, the children will be ready to run through the fountains and challenge every adult within range of the spray cannons.
Dinner at Bubba Gumbo’s
Enjoy fresh local seafood in a casual dockside setting overlooking Lazaretto Creek. There is always something interesting for children to watch, including boats, birds, and activity along the working waterfront.
Ice Cream on the Island
No family beach vacation is complete without at least one evening when ice cream counts as an essential food group.
Day Three: Marine Life, Giant Pizza, and More Water Fun
Breakfast at Sunrise Restaurant
By the third morning, everyone will probably have a favorite order—and the staff may already recognize the family.
Tybee Island Marine Science Center
Visit the touch tank, learn about local marine animals, and discover more about Tybee’s beaches, dunes, and coastal ecosystem. This is especially good for younger children or when the family needs a break from the sun.
Explore Fort Screven
Walk through the historic North End neighborhood and visit the remaining Fort Screven structures. If attention spans are fading, skip the history and return directly to the beach. It is a vacation, not a field trip.
Lunch at Huc-A-Poo’s
Order one of Huc-A-Poo’s enormous made-from-scratch pizzas and let everyone choose their favorite toppings. The funky décor, indoor and outdoor seating, laid-back atmosphere, and giant slices make this a memorable Tybee experience for the entire family.
Browse Tybee Oaks
Walk through the local shops and vendors surrounding Huc-A-Poo’s. Let each child select one souvenir to remember the trip.
The Grand Finale at the Pools and Splash Pad
Spend the final afternoon at Hotel Tybee’s pools and Tybee Tidal Zone. This is the time for family photographs, one last spray-cannon battle, and repeated negotiations over what “five more minutes” actually means.
Rest and Change for Dinner
Allow everyone time to cool down and recharge before the final night.
Dinner at Sting Ray’s Seafood
Finish the vacation with a casual Tybee seafood dinner. The outdoor seating, relaxed island atmosphere, and menu variety make Sting Ray’s an easy final-night choice for families.
Farewell Walk on the Tybee Pier
Take one final walk above the ocean and let everyone name the best part of the vacation. The adults may choose the dolphins or seafood, but the splash pad will be extremely difficult to beat.
