OtherFilmed in Savannah, “Emperor” is inspired by the legend of Shields “Emperor” Green, a descendant of African kings turned outlaw slave in the pre-Civil War South. Seeking freedom for his family, Emperor fights his way north, joining the daring raid on Harper's Ferry and helping alter the course of American history.

The movie's director and writer, Mark Amin, who said that “here was a young slave who ran away from his plantation, made it to freedom, and had Fredrick Douglass offer to send him to Canada to live in safety. Instead he chose to join John Brown and fight for the principles he believed in. This is what inspired me to make this film.”

A lot of locals will see themselves up on the big screen, since Savannah played host to a number of the filmed Civil War battle sequences in the summer of 2018.

Produced by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Reginald Hudlin (“The Black Godfather,” “Django Unchained”), Emperor stars Dayo Okeniyi, Naturi Naughton, Kat Graham, Mykelti Williamson, and Oscar nominees James Cromwell and Bruce Dern.

Four screenings: Fri.-Sat. April 10-11, 7 pm; Sun. April. 12 3 & 7 pm
