Peaceful paddling or competitive racing, few things compare to floating along the Georgia Coast. The 17th Annual Sea Kayak Races mark the perfect way to enjoy one of summer’s last Saturdays. Don’t own a boat? No worries! You can rent one right onsite where the races start and finish, at A-J’s Dockside. Whether you’re an avid stand-up paddleboarder or just want to try your hand at kayaking Tybee Island, racers are welcome to choose from a number of different courses, including:
Tybee River Race
At 6.5 miles, this race is focused on overall speed and endurance on the tidal river between Tybee and Little Tybee Islands. It’s open to everyone, from seasoned kayakers to casual paddlers, the latter of which need only finish 2 miles of the course.
Little Tybee Challenge
Reserved for more experienced riders, this 8-mile trek runs the gamut of Tybee Island, from tight creeks to wide rivers, along the coast, and in the surf. Be sure you’re comfortable on rough waters, and practiced in methods of self-rescue.
Race Across the River
Limited to Gold and Platinum sponsors, this highly competitive route runs across the Back River and back to A-J’s, making it a great one watch.
Proceeds Benefit Tybee Island Marine Science Center
The Sea Kayak Races raise over $12,000 a year toward preservation of the Georgia Coast, and educational initiatives in conjunction with Tybee Island Marine Science Center, just 2 blocks from Hotel Tybee.
