Every October, something strange happens on Tybee Island. Perfectly reasonable adults put on eye patches, exchange their everyday clothes for pirate coats and begin saying "ARRR" with absolutely no explanation or apology.
Tybee Island Pirate Fest returns October 8–11, 2026, and if you are considering joining us, I have one piece of advice: do not treat this like a quick Saturday visit. Arrive early, stay late and give yourselves time to enjoy the entire wonderfully ridiculous experience.
Pirate Fest is not simply an event you attend. It slowly takes over the entire island. Restaurants, bars, shops, the beach and even normally respectable people become part of the fun. For four days, Tybee turns into a seaside pirate village filled with costumes, music, food, performers, carnival rides and thousands of people who have collectively agreed that behaving normally can wait until Monday.
Thursday: Get Here Before the Mutiny Begins
The smartest pirates arrive on Thursday. You will avoid the busiest traffic, settle into your room at Hotel Tybee and have time to locate the beach, the Oasis Tiki Bar and perhaps your first frozen cocktail before the official swashbuckling begins.
Thursday night brings one of the weekend's biggest traditions: the Buccaneer Ball at the world-famous Original Crab Shack. The 19th annual celebration runs from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. with grub, grog and an entire building full of pirates and wenches. The new Pirate King and Queen will be sashed at 7:30 p.m., officially beginning their reign over the weekend.
This is an ages-18-and-older event, tickets are required and costumes are very strongly encouraged. In other words, this is not the night to timidly wear a striped shirt and claim you tried. Go all in. Add the hat, boots, eye patch, sword and whatever other deeply unnecessary pirate accessories make you happy.
Most importantly, Thursday is also when the carnival opens at Hotel Tybee.
Yes, Pirate Fest now has a carnival. At the beach. At Hotel Tybee. Because apparently pirates, live music, costumes, rum and a parade were not already enough excitement.
The carnival will operate throughout Pirate Fest from Thursday through Sunday. Expect glowing lights, carnival treats, rides and the sort of out-of-control fun that makes you feel like a child again. You will be able to step out of Hotel Tybee and find yourself in the middle of it all.
Friday: Assemble Your Crew
Friday morning should begin with breakfast, strong coffee and an honest evaluation of whatever choices were made at the Buccaneer Ball. Then spend a few peaceful hours on the beach or beside one of our two pools before the pirates completely take over.
If your crew is feeling particularly spirited, the Cape Fear Rum Pirate Pub Crawl checks in at noon near the top of Tybrisa Street and officially sets sail at 1:00 p.m. Pirate hosts will lead participants to more than six Tybee bars, with prizes and plenty of mischief along the way. Space is limited, so register early if this sounds like your preferred form of island exploration.
The official festival grounds open Friday from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m., and admission is free. The opening ceremony begins at 5:00 p.m., followed by live music from Kraken's Release, Wymberly and Outlaw Gypsy. You can also expect pirate performers, the Tybee Mermaid Water Show and plenty of surprises.
Little Matey's Cove will have free face painting, a petting zoo, magic, music and entertainment for younger pirates. Meanwhile, the grown pirates can explore the vendors, enjoy the live bands and attempt to remember where they left their ship.
When the festival closes, you will have one enormous advantage: Hotel Tybee is right beside the festival grounds. There is no long drive, no distant parking lot and no abandoning the fun early. Walk back to your room, recharge and prepare to do it all again.
Saturday: The Island Goes Completely Pirate
Saturday is the biggest day of the weekend, and it begins at 11:00 a.m. with free admission to the festival grounds. Give yourselves time to wander through the vendors, enjoy the pirate and mermaid performances, visit Little Matey's Cove and listen to live music throughout the day.
The annual Pirate Fest Parade takes place Saturday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. This is one of those wonderfully Tybee experiences that you simply need to witness in person. Expect elaborate floats, pirate ships, outrageous costumes and more marauding buccaneers than any small island should reasonably be able to accommodate.
If you are staying at Hotel Tybee, you will be perfectly positioned on the parade route and right beside the festival grounds. That means more time enjoying the parade and less time worrying about transportation.
Saturday's musical lineup includes Justin Vreeland, the Anders Thomsen Trio, Southern Charm & JB, Unifya and Denim Arcade. There will also be an adult costume contest at 6:00 p.m., so this is your opportunity to finally receive public recognition for spending far too much money on a pirate costume.
Between the festival and carnival, Saturday will be nonstop fun from morning until 11:00 p.m. Grab seafood, dance to the bands, ride something you probably should not have ridden immediately after dinner and take plenty of pictures. This is not the weekend to be too dignified.
Sunday: One Last Day of Plundering
Do not rush home Sunday morning. The final day of Pirate Fest runs from noon until 4:00 p.m., with free admission, live music from the Eric Jones Trio and Broke Locals, the Tybee Mermaid Water Show and more family entertainment.
Sunday is also your opportunity to enjoy any part of Tybee that you missed during the busiest festival days. Climb the historic lighthouse, tour Fort Pulaski, take a dolphin cruise, explore our tidal creeks by kayak or simply spend a few hours on the beach listening to the waves.
Stop for great pizza at Huc-A-Poos, enjoy a locally brewed beer at Back River Brewery or treat yourselves to dinner at Sundae Cafe. If there is any energy remaining, return to the carnival for one final ride before it closes.
Better still, stay Sunday night. Once the weekend crowd begins sailing home, Tybee becomes quiet again. You can enjoy dinner, walk along the beach beneath the stars and sleep late Monday morning instead of ending your weekend in traffic.
Your Pirate Headquarters at Hotel Tybee
Hotel Tybee is not simply close to Pirate Fest. We are beside the festival grounds, on the parade route and home to the carnival. You can park your car, put away the keys and walk to nearly everything.
Between adventures, you will have two outdoor pools, the Oasis Tiki Bar, bicycles, beach chairs, the Tybee Tidal Zone splash pad and the Atlantic Ocean waiting just steps away. Most importantly, your room gives you a convenient place to rest, change costumes and recover before the next round of piracy begins.
Pirate Fest is one of Tybee Island's most colorful, energetic and delightfully strange traditions. Come Thursday for the Buccaneer Ball. Stay through Sunday for the entire celebration. Better yet, stay until Monday and give yourselves one quiet island night after the final cannon has fired.
Pack your pirate costume, assemble your crew and prepare to surrender your dignity.
