If you have been waiting for one last excuse to sneak away to the beach this summer, I am officially giving it to you. Labor Day Weekend on Tybee Island is shaping up to be an incredible celebration filled with warm ocean water, long beach days, outstanding local food, live music and fireworks over the Atlantic. My strongest advice is simple: arrive early, stay late and give yourselves enough time to truly settle into island life.
Labor Day may technically be Monday, but your vacation should start on Thursday. Coming to Tybee ahead of the Friday traffic gives you more time on the island and lets you begin your getaway at a much more relaxed pace. Check into Hotel Tybee, drop your bags and make your first important decision: beach or pool? There really is no wrong answer.
Once you have officially traded your shoes for flip-flops, take an evening walk along the beach, wander out onto the Tybee Pier and grab dinner and a few cocktails within walking distance of the hotel. If you arrive early enough, the Dave Matthews Tribute Band will be performing at the Tybee Post Theater Thursday night. That is a pretty fantastic way to kick off a long weekend at the beach.
Let Friday Feel Like a Vacation Day
Friday morning should begin slowly. Wake up, step onto your private balcony and breathe in that first salty Atlantic breeze. Grab breakfast at one of our wonderful local restaurants, then spend the morning doing whatever sounds least like work.
You might stretch out on the sand, float together in one of our two pools, take our Hotel Tybee bicycles for a ride around the island or challenge each other to a completely unnecessary but highly competitive game of cornhole. Stop by the Oasis Tiki Bar for a frozen drink, enjoy lunch near the beach and remember that there is absolutely no award for maintaining a schedule while visiting Tybee.
Friday afternoon is also a great time to explore the island. Climb the 178 steps to the top of the historic Tybee Island Lighthouse, visit Fort Pulaski, browse the unique local shops at Tybee Oaks or head onto the water for a dolphin cruise. If the two of you are feeling adventurous, rent jet skis, schedule surfing lessons or explore our beautiful tidal creeks by kayak. If your idea of adventure involves a beach chair and a cold drink, I fully support that decision too.
Friday night brings a little island escapism to the Tybee Post Theater with an acoustic performance by Sons of Sailors, celebrating the music and laid-back spirit of Jimmy Buffett. You could also keep things casual with great pizza, drinks and live music at Huc-A-Poos, followed by a moonlit walk on the beach.
Saturday Is for Sunshine, Seafood and Live Music
By Saturday, you should be fully adjusted to Tybee time. Start with an early walk along the shoreline while the island is still waking up. Watch the shrimp boats in the distance, look for dolphins just beyond the waves and enjoy a quiet moment together before another beautiful beach day begins.
Spend the afternoon alternating between the Atlantic Ocean, our pools and the Oasis Tiki Bar. Take a bike ride, shop along Tybrisa Street or head to the Back River for lunch and waterfront views. If you want to make the day truly unforgettable, book a private boat trip to Little Tybee Island or Shark Tooth Island. These undeveloped barrier islands offer a completely different perspective of our coastline and are two of my favorite experiences to recommend.
Make Saturday dinner special. Sundae Cafe is, hands down, one of the best restaurants anywhere, while Bubba Gumbo's serves incredible local seafood in a wonderfully relaxed waterfront setting. Reservations are always a smart idea during a holiday weekend.
After dinner, the island comes alive. The official 2026 Tybee Island Labor Day Beach Bash begins Saturday night at the Tybee Pier and Pavilion, with free live music starting at 7:00 p.m. This year's celebration features Landslide, a Fleetwood Mac tribute, and the legendary Swingin' Medallions across the two-night celebration. You can also catch the full-band Sons of Sailors Jimmy Buffett tribute at the Tybee Post Theater Saturday night. There will be music in the air all over the island, so follow whichever sound puts you in the best mood.
Sunday Is the Big Tybee Send-Off to Summer
Sunday morning is not the time to begin thinking about going home. It is the time to order another cup of coffee and prepare for one of the best days of the entire summer.
Enjoy a lazy morning at Hotel Tybee, take another swim and claim your favorite spot on the beach. Walk out onto the pier, rent a fishing rod and see if you can catch your dinner. Book a sunset dolphin cruise or find a peaceful place along the Back River to watch the sky begin changing colors.
Then get ready for the biggest night of the weekend. The Labor Day Beach Bash returns to the Tybee Pier Sunday evening with another free concert beginning at 7:00 p.m. When darkness falls, fireworks will light up the sky over the Atlantic Ocean.
Hotel Tybee puts you just steps from all the excitement. There is no long drive back, no searching for your car and no leaving early to beat traffic. You can enjoy the music, watch the fireworks from the beach and walk back to your room when the celebration ends. As far as I am concerned, fireworks over the ocean are the only proper way to say goodbye to summer.
Why Rush Home on Monday?
This is where "stay late" becomes important. While everyone else is packing cars and fighting traffic on Labor Day morning, you could still be sitting beside the pool or enjoying another walk on the beach.
Spend Monday soaking up everything you did not get to earlier in the weekend. Visit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, climb the lighthouse, enjoy lunch at the world-famous Original Crab Shack or sample locally brewed beer at Back River Brewery. From 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., the Tybee Island Farmers Market will be open near the lighthouse with local food, art, crafts and live music. It is a wonderful way to experience the creative, friendly personality of our island.
Stay through Monday night if you can. You will enjoy a quieter evening, another great local dinner and a much easier trip home Tuesday morning. That one additional night can make the difference between feeling as though you squeezed in a holiday weekend and feeling as though you actually took a vacation.
