I have always believed Tybee Island deserves a signature celebration built around one of the things our coastal community does best: seafood.
This November, that belief becomes reality.
The first annual Tybee Island Seafood Festival will take place November 8–15, 2026, transforming Georgia's Friendliest Island into an entire week of fresh seafood, special restaurant offerings, live music, local vendors and coastal fun.
Because this is our inaugural year, every person who attends gets to become part of Tybee history. Years from now, when this festival has become one of the island's biggest traditions, you will be able to say, "We were there for the very first one."
My advice is to come hungry, arrive early and stay late. This is not merely one meal or one afternoon at the pier. It is an opportunity for couples to build an entire fall beach escape around great food and an exciting new Tybee celebration.
Why November Is One of Tybee's Best-Kept Secrets
People tend to associate beach vacations with the middle of summer, but those of us who know Tybee understand how special the island can be in November.
The weather is typically comfortable, the beach is wonderfully uncrowded and the pace of the island becomes slower and more relaxed. You can walk along the shoreline without the intense summer heat, explore the island by bicycle and enjoy our restaurants without feeling rushed.
It is an ideal time for a couple's getaway. Sleep a little later. Drink your coffee on your private balcony. Take a long walk on the beach. Spend the afternoon exploring and let dinner become the biggest decision of the day.
Then add an island-wide seafood celebration, and suddenly November looks like a very good time to visit Tybee.
Arrive Early and Taste Your Way Around the Island
The festival begins Sunday, November 8, with an island-wide Restaurant Celebration continuing through November 15. Participating Tybee restaurants will introduce exclusive seafood dishes, special menu offerings and festival-inspired experiences throughout the week.
That means you do not have to wait until the main festival weekend to join the fun. Arrive several days early and turn the entire visit into a seafood tour of Tybee Island.
Try fresh shrimp with a waterfront view, locally caught fish prepared by talented island chefs, steamed oysters, Lowcountry classics and whatever creative dishes our participating restaurants dream up for the week. Visit an old favorite one night and try somewhere completely new the next.
I certainly recommend Bubba Gumbo's, my favorite local seafood restaurant, where the relaxed waterfront setting is every bit as authentic as the food. The world-famous Original Crab Shack is another Tybee experience everyone should enjoy at least once. For an unforgettable dinner, Sundae Cafe is hands down one of the best restaurants anywhere.
The beauty of arriving early is that you can explore without rushing. Climb the historic Tybee Island Lighthouse, visit Fort Pulaski, shop among the local vendors at Tybee Oaks or take a private boat trip to Little Tybee or Shark Tooth Island. Head out on a dolphin cruise, kayak through our tidal creeks or simply enjoy having a huge stretch of beach almost entirely to yourselves.
Friday Night: Oysters, Lowcountry Favorites and a Wonderful Cause
Friday, November 13, brings the festival home to Hotel Tybee for an Oyster Roast and Lowcountry Boil. This will be an evening filled with fresh oysters, Lowcountry classics, live entertainment and the kind of coastal hospitality that makes Tybee special. It is the perfect setting to gather with friends, meet new people and celebrate the food and culture of our coast.
Even more importantly, the evening will benefit Heads-Up Guidance Services, better known as HUGS. This local nonprofit provides educational, developmental and therapeutic programs that improve the lives of children and families in our community.
This part of the festival means a great deal to me personally. My wife, Lorrian, serves as the HUGS board chair, and I have seen firsthand how passionately this organization works to help local families in need. Enjoying an incredible evening while supporting such a meaningful mission makes Friday night even more special.
Stay at Hotel Tybee and the entire celebration will be right here. You can enjoy the oysters, entertainment and Lowcountry boil without worrying about driving anywhere afterward. When the evening ends, your room is only a short walk away.
Saturday: The Big Celebration at the Pier
Saturday, November 14, is the centerpiece of the first annual Tybee Island Seafood Festival.
From 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion area will come alive with fresh seafood, live bands, local vendors, games and entertainment. There will be a Kids' Zone for younger festivalgoers and even a shrimp-peeling contest for anyone brave enough to put their Lowcountry credentials on public display.
The best way to experience Saturday is without an overly complicated plan. Walk over from Hotel Tybee, follow the music and eat whatever smells too good to pass.
Sample seafood from different vendors. Listen to the bands. Browse locally made products. Meet the people behind the food and businesses that make Tybee unique. Take a break on the beach, return for another round of food and then stay for the evening entertainment.
Most importantly, pace yourselves. This is a marathon, not a shrimp.
Hotel Tybee is located just steps from the pier and festival celebration, so you can easily move between the festivities, your guestroom, our pools and the beach throughout the day. No fighting traffic. No searching for distant parking. No choosing between leaving early and staying for one more band.
Stay Late and Give Yourselves a Sunday on Tybee
After Saturday's celebration, the biggest mistake you could make is packing the car first thing Sunday morning. Stay for the final day of the island-wide Restaurant Celebration. Sleep late, walk the beach and enjoy one more seafood meal before heading home. Take a sunset dolphin cruise, visit Back River Brewery or find a quiet spot near Alley Three to watch the sun sink behind the marsh.
Sunday gives the two of you time to actually relax after the excitement of Friday and Saturday. It turns a busy festival weekend into a genuine vacation.
If your schedules allow, stay Sunday night and travel home Monday. You will enjoy a quieter island, lighter traffic and one final evening together before returning to the real world.
Help Us Begin a New Tybee Tradition
There is something special about attending the very first year of any great event. No one knows exactly which dish will become the one everyone talks about, who will win the first shrimp-peeling contest or which moment will eventually become festival legend.
We get to discover all of that together.
My hope is that the Tybee Island Seafood Festival becomes a celebration our community and visitors look forward to every November—a week that supports local restaurants and businesses, showcases our coastal culture and gives people another wonderful reason to visit Tybee Island.
Hotel Tybee places you at the center of it all. We are hosting Friday night's Oyster Roast and Lowcountry Boil, and we are only steps from Saturday's main festival celebration at the pier. Between events, you can enjoy our two outdoor pools, the Oasis Tiki Bar, bicycles, beach chairs and miles of beautiful Atlantic shoreline.
Join us November 8–15, or build your getaway around the major celebrations on November 13 and 14. Come early enough to explore the island. Stay late enough to enjoy it after the crowds leave. Most importantly, come hungry.
The first annual Tybee Island Seafood Festival only happens once.
I cannot wait to share it with you.
